12 Hour: This mixture is suitable for large surfaces, outdoor work, in dry conditions and where there is not too much dust. To obtain the best results in terms of brilliance and depth, the 12-hour gilding mixture should be used rather than the 3-hour mixture. It will also be resistant for longer (stronger pictorial film).

3 Hour: This mixture is suitable on smaller surfaces for inside work or when the 12 hour mixture may not be used for whatever reason (wet climate or too much dust).

TIME TO TACK

3 hour size comes to tack in approximately 1.5 hours.

12 hour comes to tack in approximately 12-14 hours.

The oil size worked for me

The oil size worked for me. We were invited out to meet with friends minutes after I had put a coat of 3 hour size on the surface. I was able to return to my studio at just about 3 hours and thought it would have been too long, but it worked perfectly.

Sounds like the perfect use of those 3 hours while waiting for the size to come up to tack!
