If existing paint is in good condition, priming is not needed. If a surface is new, priming and painting with acrylic wall paint will provide the best, uniform surface for applying the Metallic Textures. Use a smooth nap roller and paint the walls or ceiling with a good quality Interior Flat paint or primer that is close to or a little darker than the finish color. Apply to full coverage. Let dry.
Note: The level of drywall preparation required is dependent upon the specified finish design. Rough textured finishes (for example, loosely troweled, stippled, or stipple/knockdown finishes) may be applied directly on a Level 3 surface (Gypsum Association G214 Standard). A level 5 surface is recommended for smooth, tight, trowel applications to prevent joints telegraphing.
Stir well before use. Apply at temperatures between 50° F & 90° F. Product can be applied by trowel, brush, roller or spray equipment. Metallic Texture Pearl Tint Base and Gold Tint Base can be used as is, or tinted to another color. May be thinned up to 30% with water if desired.
May be tinted with waterborne or Universal colorants (UTC), up to 10% by volume. Use transparent pigments to maintain maximum metallic luster. Golden Paintworks provides Benjamin Moore retailers with 20 specific color formulas that are created using our 2 tint base colors and Gennex colorants. (See dealer for details).
@ 50% RH, 77° F: To touch 1 hour. Recoat in 2-4 hours. Air movement and exchange will assist in proper drying.
Note: GPW strongly recommends that specifiers require applicators to prepare a sample in accordance with PDCA P5-94 "Benchmark Sample Procedure for Paint and Other Decorative Coating Systems.
Clean your skin and equipment immediately after use with soap and warm
water. Dried material is safe to dispose of in regular trash.
3 Coat Trowel Application
Tools:
Small (200 x 80) or Medium (240 x 100) Stainless Steel Trowel
3” spatula
400 grit sandpaper
First Coat
Using the spatula to feed the trowel, apply a full first coat of Metallic Texture in a smooth application. Try to keep the tool lines to a minimum. Stop working the texture if it starts to “pull”. If the texture has started to set, lightly spray with some water to smooth down the first coat. If the texture is being applied very thin to show the base color, be sure to use a plastic trowel because the base paint will cause black marks with a steel trowel. Let dry for an hour or two depending on how thickly the first coat was applied.
Second Coat
Apply the second coat very thin over 100% of the surface. Work with small amounts of material at a time without overworking the same spot. Try to apply and take off with as few motions as possible. Take care with each blade landing to avoid straight lines. Let dry.
Third Coat
Apply the Metallic Texture the same way the second coat was applied. This
third coat helps to even out the visual texture for a more uniform movement and look. Apply the texture very thin and tight to the surface.
Coverage: approximately 100 – 150 sq.ft./ gallon finished
2 Coat Trowel Application:
This is a similar application method to the 3 coat system except the surface is painted first with a GPW Metallic Paint color that is complementary to the Metallic Texture color. It results in a much more dramatic and lustrous finish.
Tools
Small (200 x 80) or Medium size Stainless Steel Trowel (240 x 100)
3” spatula
Procedure
Paint the wall with one or two coats of GPW Metallic Paint. This does not have to be to full coverage. Just close.
First Coat:
Apply the Metallic Texture with short and random strokes fairly tight to the surface leaving some of the base Metallic Paint showing through the texture. Keep the strokes short and consistent. Let dry 1-2 hours.
Second coat:
Apply the Metallic Texture the same way the first coat was applied keeping the strokes short and random. Continue until the entire wall is covered. Stand back and look at the surface. Any noticeable patches should be gone over again until the surface looks consistent.
Coverage: 250 sq. ft. / gallon finished
Texturing application
This finish is a solution for walls that are not in very good condition and is
the easiest finish to apply.
Tools:
Large (240 x 120) Trowel or Taping Knife
6” or 9” sea sponge roller
Roller cover with a ½” nap with frame and pan
Procedure
Paint the surface first in a color that is similar to the final Metallic Texture color.
First Coat
Thin the Metallic Texture with 25% water. Roll it on the surface with a ½” nap roller to about 10 sq. ft. Take a large taping knife or trowel and gently knock down the roller texture with the blade angle fairly flat to the surface. Continue across the wall until the entire surface is covered. Let dry.
Second Coat
Take the sea sponge roller and saturate it with Metallic Texture, rolling off the excess. Start applying it to the wall with gradually increasing pressure until you get the texture you want. Apply to about 10 sq. ft. Take the trowel or knife and gently “knock down” the peaks with the blade held fairly flat to the surface; the peaks should be about 1/16” high. Continue across the wall until finished. Let dry.
Third Coat (optional to reduce physical texture)
Apply full strength Metallic Texture very thin and tight to 100% of the textured surface.
Coverage: 100-150 sq. ft./ gallon finished
Spray Application
Spraying allows for a consistent, uniform amount of product to be applied rapidly for a quick follow up knock down. When spraying, wear eye protection and particulate respirator, and prevent others from coming into contact with spray mist. Spray equipment options:
Hopper Sprayer:
• Marshalltown SharpShooter® or equivalent
• #1 tip (3/16” / 5mm orifice); 40 PSI
• No reduction required, but may be reduced up to 30% to adjust
application properties.
Pump/compressed air sprayers with reservoir:
• Best Recommendation: Graco® TexSpray RTX 1500 or equivalent
• White Tip (50 mesh, for Latex); ”high” air volume setting
• Reduce 10% - 15% with water when using line feed from stationary
hopper.
